The Resident - on being a liberal

Last night my deeply Republican mother and I had a political conversation. This usually ends badly as I am so far to the left, and she is so far to the right.

What it came down to was her using the term "liberal" as though it is a dirty word. The tone of her voice when she says it exposes her deep sense of loathing for the word and the deed. It is the same tone she uses when she calls me un-American, or Agnostic.

Perhaps what the latest presidential election has meant to me is that my elected leaders are no longer going to use the word "liberal" as a dirty word. It is no longer equated so easily with this un-American terminology.

I, like The Resident, am proud to be an American... and a liberal.

Hey- my brother called me a communist last year. I suggested that he look up the meaning. It is amazing how dirty the crazies make the word "Lieral" sound, isn't it? That's how I feel when women say they aren't feminists. They really are, they are just not understanding that one doesn't need to allow a wrong definition to change the real meaning of the word.
BTW, thanks again for the tix. I had huge fun and hopefully will have some time this weekend to post about it. It's been a crazy week!

Where did our parents learn that from? How could they have forgotten what the liberal ideals of the New Deal did for their parents and grandparents, back before WW2 came along to put the sparkle back in the economy?

It sounds awful, I know. But had it not been for the second World War, our economy would have taken much longer to recover from the Great Depression. The New Deal helped people when they needed it until the war economy could support them.

Why was liberal such a dirty word up until people* needed it again? The hypocrisy is a little too much to bear sometimes.

@ Cliff
I could just hug you man!
When are you and Sarah going to come to Berlin? We have some lovely Christmas markets... or maybe you just want to sit around and drink Gluhwein?

When Americans talk about "liberals", I hear an echo of the way Nazis talked about Jews.

A little too smart, a little too decadent, a little too rich.

The liberal media elite sounds a lot like the conspiracy of Jewish bankers. Degenerates who want to destroy ordinary folk.

Never mind that liberals, more than their Republican opposites, take the little guy seriously.
