Amerikafest 2008

The American Embassy in Berlin is back in its former historic spot on Pariser Platz and they want us to come celebrate its opening with Amerikafest 2008.

Saturday, July 5th there will be a public open-air street festival and stage shows around the Brandenburg Gate, up Straße des 17. Juni of course on Pariser Platz.

It will be a bit like having a Fourth of July here in Berlin!

I can see it now... hot dogs, bbq, music, hamburgers, dancing, and of course beer.

The JFK museum in the neighborhood will open its doors for a reduced price, so I plan on taking them up on that, and I'm hoping that the Embassy itself will allow us a peek inside, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

On July 4th the Embassy will be having the REAL opening... the official opening... The one they've declined my invitation to attend. (no shit, I wrote them three letters starting two months ago asking if I could be there... um, never heard back... now THAT'S service!) They've invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Bush Sr. will be hanging around as well. This will all culminate with fireworks over the Gate, with music simulcast on 88.8.

Ôh bummer, that sounds like a great time, but I don't think we'll be able to swing up on short notice like that. I was really intrigued by Berlin in May 1993 and November 2005 but still have a lot of stuff to check out there. And the surreality of a pseudo-July 4th party is almost too much for me to pass up.

*sigh*
