St. Patrick's Day Parade NYC 2008

I thought I would try my hand at a Flicker Blog. Sorry if it wreaked havoc with RSS readers, it was actually about five different blog entries.

Below you will see some of the pictures from our time in NYC during the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Wow, what an experience!

There were so many people in town for the parade, it was a little crazy. We kept hearing bits of Irish and British accents as we walked through the streets.

It isn't St. Pat's without a crazy hat!

The parade itself was awesome! Six hours of fun and fantastic music!

Taken from on top of "The Rock"
Notice that the bridge in the distance (sorry, no idea which one) even has green lights!

HAD to have the shirt!
Because I really DO "Shamrock NY"!

All in all it was a great experience. We had a great time walking along the parade route enjoying all of the spectators... they were almost as fun as the people participating in the parade themselves. The sun came out only one day during our entire stay in NYC, and that was St. Pat's Day. Nice, eh? As I said in a previous post, we even managed to get sunburned because of it.

I hear that Chicago dyes the river green for their St. Pats parade... maybe we should go there next year...

The believe that the bridge with the green lights is the Brooklyn Bridge with the Wiiliamsburg & Manhattan Bridges in the foreground...

Glad to hear you enjoyed the parade, attending has been a tradtion with me since my parents took me at the age of five months....my photos of this year's parade didn't turn out as well as yours..I forgot gloves and my hands were freezing

If you liked the NYC parade you might be sorely disappointed by the one in Chicago... it is far more cartoonish in content and character than NY's. After living the first 30 years of my life as a NY'er & then moving to chicago I found the local St. Pat's customs to be a bit hard to take

Yes they do dye the river green on the day of the parade but the parade is only held on the 17th if it falls on a saturday...

@ Diane - Oh yes, we had a fantastic time! The Parade was lots of fun. I have a problem with the water in my eyes... Every time I hear the droning whine of the bagpipes my eyes start tearing... By the end of that parade I didn't have this problem any more.

@ Narrowback - Hey, thanks for the information about the bridge. This was my first visit to NYC and I had enough trouble just telling north from south.
As for the eye-opening about Chicago, you have possibly changed my mind about attending their parade. I really enjoyed the solemn way of celebrating the day and I'm afraid that if it gets kitschy I might not enjoy it.
I wonder if Dublin's celebration would be a better alternative?

Kein Problem!

The only thing I've heard about the Dublin parade is that it is "low key"

Savannah, GA has one that rivals both NY and Chi in terms of size....plus the weather is a heel of a lot better than either of those two northern cities.

I've enjoyed a St. Pat's Day pub crawl in Berlin. There's enough irish pubs to keep you busy most of the day
